If you are going to travel to Machu Picchu by train in the Cusco region there are two companies operating the railway using different routes. Cusco – Machu Picchu, Poroy – Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo – Machu Picchu. The companies are PeruRail and Inca Rail. These operators offer services by categories, from a luxury train to the local or economic.

  1. PERU RAIL

PeruRail offers train services in Machu Picchu from Cusco, Poroy and Ollantaytambo as train services between Cusco and Puno and vice versa

Train Expedition:

It is designed for adventurous passengers looking for comfort and safety. The Expedition service has remodeled its seats with tapestries with Inca motifs, a very local touch, as well as the comfort of having ample space for backpacks. There are panoramic windows so you can enjoy your journey to Machu Picchu.

Train Vistadome:

The fastest and most convenient way to visit Machu Picchu. On the trip, you can enjoy delicious snacks and drinks both hot and cold. There are newly renovated cars, which are equipped with panoramic windows that allow you to enjoy a spectacular view and take wonderful pictures.

Hiram Bingham Luxury Train:

It has 2 cars with 42 seats for passengers. There is a car bar and another car for cooking for the preparation of food, and an observation car with a balcony. Among the exquisite design details of the cars, are large and comfortable seats and extra wide tables. Almost 3 meters longer and 30 cm wider than others on the same route, these cars are among the most spacious and comfortable in the world.

Local Train:

The local train is exclusively for national tourists and for those who have residence in the city of Cusco. It is a very comfortable train for those who prefer to travel economically.

2.  INCA RAIL

Unlike PeruRail, this company only operates between the stations of Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes.

Inca Rail Tourist Train

The cars have space for 48 passengers and have comfortable seats which have been carefully designed to ensure maximum comfort. In addition, all the seats have tables to the front and panoramic windows to enjoy the beautiful landscape.

First class train

There are only 30 passengers per car. This service has spacious and comfortable seats, which have been carefully designed to ensure the total comfort of the passengers. In addition, all the seats have tables to the front and panoramic windows to enjoy the beautiful landscape on the journey to Machu Picchu.

CONDITIONS OF TRAVEL

Reservations must be made at least 20 days in advance.

Passengers may not be admitted on the train if their physical or health condition is not compatible with the trip.

In the event of weather disruptions, STRIKES, natural disasters and / or mechanical failures which cause delays and / or cancellation and / or re-scheduling of itineraries, the operator has no obligation and is not responsible for what is beyond their control.

Passengers can only board the train showing the original train tickets and their passports.

E-tickets are not refundable.

Any cancellation made by the passenger within 30 days prior to the trip will be subject to a penalty of the total amount paid.

Passengers who do not send a cancellation or do not present themselves on the day of the trip, will lose their tickets.

Changes of dates can be made no more than 24 hours before the departure of the train, but this alteration can only be done by the passenger directly in the offices of PeruRail in Cusco, showing their original identity document and ticket. The new date will be subject to availability for the next 7 days. The penalty is 10% of the ticket price and must be paid directly at the PeruRail offices in Cusco (the receipt must be shown along with the e-ticket when boarding.) Tickets can only be changed once.

Information About Train Tickets

Tickets must be presented at the train station half an hour before the departure of the train. You must show your passports and 2 copies of the tickets (one is for the counter and the other is your boarding pass) and board the train .
Note:
The transfer from Cusco to the station of Ollantaytambo is your own responsibility or the responsibility of the operating agency that you use.
Luggage allowed in the car of Machu Picchu is a maximum of 5 kg.

Boarding Policy:

1. Passengers (adults and children) must present their valid travel ticket and identity document (original or legible copy) when boarding the train.
2. Passengers who carry adulterated or false documents will be denied boarding.
3. PeruRail may restrict boarding to passengers in delicate and inadequate health status, as well as women with advanced gestation (equal to or greater than seven months).
4. Boarding shall be denied to passengers in a state of intoxication or under the influence of drugs, or because of their altered state they represent a potential danger to their own safety or that of other passengers.
5. PeruRail may physically inspect and register any baggage that represents a suspicion of danger.
6. The shipment of luggage that exceeds the following measures may be refused: bag or backpack weighing 5 kg
7. The transport of: Weapons, ammunition, explosive substances or any risky object that may constitute a danger to the operation is not allowed. Objects and / or animals that cause discomfort to passengers, block movement in wagons or constitute an obstacle to an evacuation in case of emergency will not be permitted.
